Accomplishments
For my first co-op, I chose to work for the Office of Communications. My background in Journalism and Media Studies influenced me to take on this job. I am also pursuing a degree in Media Arts with a concentration in Public Relations. This was also the first year co-op positions were available to students. So I believed Co-oping at Antioch is a more intricate way to continue learning all of the fundamentals of journalism. I have three supervisors who all participate in different sectors of the Office of Communications. My direct supervisor, James Lippincott is a well known author and curator for Antioch College. While working remotely, my everyday consist of giving him an overview of the task I have completed and he will respond with feedback and follow up tasks. So far, I have published two articles and created a photo essay. This was a very big accomplishment for me since I have not published since last April. One of the most interesting tasks I had was reviewing alumni Co-op stories and remarks for former president, Bob Devine ‘67. I compiled the stories in numerical order based on class. This helps my supervisors re-publish alumni responses quickly. But this also allowed me to peer into alumni’s lives at Antioch, which consist of extravagant experiences heartfelt stories. I believe my position allows me to reveal the current student life at Antioch College. Due to the pandemic, the office of communications primarily works from home. With this position's promise to provide free room and board, it was made possible for me to capture student led events. The media supply room ran by David Adkins also granted me access to cameras and tripods. This allowed me to show student life in the most professional ways possible. While also continuing my passion for photography outside of school. Overall, I believe my Co-op experience is a once in a lifetime experience. I am grateful to find this position in such ample time while also hitting the ground running. In the near future, I will be publishing another story while assisting the Communications Office with upcoming tasks. This position has allowed me to revisit my love for journalism and photography and I cannot be more grateful for my co-op experience.Gallery I

Public Relations in a Pandemic: Robinson ’24 at On-Ramps in Washington DC
Mar 07, 2022My name is Anna Robinson. I am a second year student with an interest in Public Relations and Marketing. In my first co-op, I enjoyed working with the communications office at Antioch College assisting them with various tasks as well as having the creative freedom to write and capture photos for the school’s newspaper. Focusing on print journalism was refreshing while reconnecting with writing. However this year I wanted to expand towards a public relations job to see if these tasks would be something I would want to do in the future.
On-Ramps is a non profit organization that aims to help students interested in IT enrolled in DC high schools and neighboring states to develop their professional skills. I have partnered with my colleagues to co-organize meetings and incentives with students in classrooms and high school interns. Whenever I am not assisting students with our training, I manage our social media posts aimed to target students who are interested in engaging with the various programs we offer.
This week I joined virtual meetings with three high school classrooms talking about the importance of resume writing and concerns with theirs. We use a software called “Nearpods” which takes students from the meeting while interacting with each other here. I learned this is a good strategy in requiring students to stay engaged with the content. This also allows everyone to participate without feeling un-included. As we continued our meetings, a few students revealed they did not start writing a resume or felt inadequate, however we used time in our meeting to give suggestions and feedback.
While taking my co-op class and participating in my On-Ramps internship full time, I also study Marketing classes at Northern Virginia Community College. While this is one of the most difficult periods of my academic career given my workload, I have been gaining a lot of crucial experience in order to understand the life of a public relations specialist. In the future, I want to own my own firm that specializes in representing Black entertainers and crisis management. I believe my co-op and dual enrollment has given me leverage over my competitors in the communications field.
