Crestone Mountain Zen Center

Intern

Tasks & Responsibilities:

Antioch College co-op students will enter residency for the period they are at CMZC. They will engage in the work program in which all residents are responsible for upkeep, maintenance, food preparation, kitchen activities, and food production (based on time of year). Work assignments are made on a daily basis, depending on Center needs. Students will work under supervision until their experience permits independent job assignments. Students are fully engaged in the meditation and study aspects of the CMZC program which includes daily sessions of Zazen, periodic study groups, lectures, and discussion groups for residents.

Qualifications:

Students who come with specific skills in areas where such skills are needed will have the opportunity to use such skills, including computer work, carpentry, plumbing, food services, etc.. Students with no special skills in needed areas will be assigned to tasks that their background and aptitudes can accommodate. This may include kitchen support, housekeeping, cleaning, laundry work, etc.. It is the practice at CMZC to use skills that residents come with, and teach and train student workers in the ongoing needs of the Center’s operation.

Learning Opportunities:

Learning opportunities for Antioch College students will be the same as for all residents. The three areas in which all activities fall are meditation, study and work practice. Antioch students will be expected and encouraged to participate in all activities that increase their capabilities in these three areas. Instruction in meditation will be offered and students will be expected to attend regular periods of Zazen, which are conducted daily. Study opportunities include individual sessions with resident teacher(s) and access to the Center’s library. Students will be encouraged to learn Buddhist concepts and practices (including history, rituals, and philosophy). The emphasis is not on theory, but on the study of the mind that emphasizes embodiment.

Additional Comments:

Use of drugs or alcohol on the CMZC campus is prohibited and cause for dismissal. Medical needs will be addressed through referral to local medical facilities. Student residents are expected to learn and practice Buddhist standards of behavior as embodied in the Buddhist Precepts that guide the inter-relationships and behavior of residents. Antioch students are invited to participate fully in the social, intellectual, spiritual and ritualistic practices of this Buddhist community. Students are expected to follow all elements of the schedule completely unless they are sick or doing special work assignments. The Schedule begins at 4:30 in the morning and ends at 9:00 at night.
