Law Office of Phillip Brigham, LLC

Legal Assistant

Tasks & Responsibilities:

The tasks for the co-op student would involve some file management and organization around the office, trial preparation assistance, filing of court documents with those courts that still require paper filing, some drafting of legal memoranda and documents and legal research. (I recognize that some of these skills may be unfamiliar at first).

Qualifications:

Organizational skills, general facility with internet research, willingness to learn.

Learning Opportunities:

As noted above, some of the tasks are likely unfamiliar to people who have not had much exposure to the legal field, and students could gain an understanding of legal research and the intricacies of the American legal system (with the possibility of examining other national legal systems as well). Students would also have the opportunity to learn how to draft and interpret legal documents and law.

Additional Comments:

None, unless going to court, in which case business attire is needed (students will know in advance if they need to wear business attire on any given day). I have a tendency to be crude and I swear like a sailor. While I do try to tone down my language to take into account other people’s sensitivities when necessary, I need to be forewarned. Students will need to sign a confidentiality agreement to preserve attorney-client privilege.
