Website Mutual Adoration
Framing and Salvaged Art Production Assistant
Tasks & Responsibilities:
We are a collaborative studio – everyone has their hands in each facet of creating the work. We would like the student to do the same. Tasks and responsibilities include sourcing materials, prepping wood, sanding, cutting, painting, staining, assembling. Photographing process and products for online sales and social media. Set up, merchandising, and retail sales at art fairs and trade shows. Design ideas and creative collaboration are encouraged.
Qualifications:
Wood shop experience is preferred but not essential – basic production skills will be taught on site. A desire to learn, create, and engage with our team is necessary. The ideal candidate will have a background in art, design, or architecture and an interest in sustainable business practices.
Learning Opportunities:
• Production of both one-of-a-kind commissioned work and limited edition goods
• Work closely with entrepreneurs and see day to day operations of a small business
• Direct-to-consumer retail experience
• Assisting with occasional teaching workshops, studio tours, and pop-up retail events
• In addition to working with Mutual Adoration, students will be encouraged to research, explore, attend art, design, and cultural events, and work on their own artistic/educational practice while in Detroit.
Additional Comments:
A portfolio of artwork/design images would be helpful, but is not necessary. Much time will be spent working on design and production in our shop. Student must be prepared to get dirty, dress for the weather, and stay safe. Work boots are a must. Layers of denim, canvas, flannel, etc. are smart. Safety glasses, work gloves, and respirator will be provided. We all dress a little better when we do shows and events. Pack an outfit or two for cleaned-up, meet-the-public occasions.
