Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage

Nutrition Educator

Tasks & Responsibilities:

• Work in one or more of the stores performing a variety of duties (e.g. helping customers, shelving, pricing, etc)

• Shadow several Nutritional Health Coaches (NHCs) on the vitamin aisle and in one-on-one private coaching sessions to get a feel for our nutrition program.

• Attend the NHC meetings to gain further nutrition education and become familiar with our group, its approach, and how we organize our program. Assist the coordinators in meeting preparations and the meeting itself.

• Research various topics to aid Karen Falbo with putting together materials and handouts for the stores. Research will be done thru the internet, books, the medical library, and calling companies.

• Learn about various political issues and educate the customers thru booths and campaigning (e.g. GMOs, organics, or supplement regulations).

• Help organize, prepare, and run a Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage sponsored event or community outreach (e.g. health fair, cooking demo, seminar)

• Travel to stores to assess organization of customer files and other materials.

• If appropriate, prepare a handout or customer file that can be given to educate customers on a specific issue.

• Help organize and participate in different programs, such as putting health hotline articles on the Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage web site, a customer support group, or a demo program around to stores (e.g. geared toward kids or seniors nutrition).

• Work with the marketing department to assist with social media support. Prepare photos for the website by cropping and resetting size. Research specific topics on our website and other reputable sites to find article links that can be posted on Facebook.

• Assist the Outreach Coordinator putting together gift baskets for donations.

• Assist the Seminar Coordinator with new contact emails for the guest presenter program in new markets.

• Assist Cooking Demo Coordinator making new contacts in cities as we open new stores and event management (communication with stores, getting posters and flyers out to stores, etc.).

• Assist and support the Video Training department setting up filming sessions for creating employee education trainings.

Qualifications:

An interest in how nutrition impacts health. An interest in food quality and sustainability. Self motivated (doesn’t require micromanaging). A willingness to learn various administrative tasks and social media marketing skills.

Learning Opportunities:

Learn about nutrition and how the body uses macro- and micronutrients. Learn about Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage standards. Learn about researching current nutrition and cooking topics for social media marketing. Learn about various administrative duties to run the nutrition education department.

Additional Comments:

• Hours will be done both in the stores as well as home or else where (e.g. corporate office, community event). This means that travel most likely will be required. A car is preferred, but Denver does have a bus system, although it will require extra time to get to different locations.

• A laptop computer is required.

• Karen Falbo the Nutrition Education Program manager will be the main contact for questions and direction and will be monitoring hours.
