Nuhop Outdoor Education Center, The

Outdoor Education Instructor

Tasks & Responsibilities:

As an outdoor education instructor, Antioch College students will be responsible for: – Teach one and a half to two hour long classes to a group of 12 – 15 middle school students – Classes include (but are not limited to): geology, ecology, stream study, survival skills, canoeing, forestry, compass, high and low ropes course – *There will be a 2 and ½ day in-service at the beginning of the season for instructors – There will be some evening and overnight hours : evening hours are from 7:30 – 8:45pm and will either be a night hike (a short hike where an instructor will cover subjects such as astronomy and nocturnal animals) or will lead a campfire. Overnight hours will require instructors to spend the night in a cabin with a group of students. – Instructors will have an opportunity to assist Nuhop staff in researching and creating new activities and curriculum for the outdoor ed program.

Qualifications:

– Experience working with youth – Experience/desire to work in the out-of-doors – Some college course work in related field (such as outdoor or environmental education, recreation, environmental science, education, etc) – Ability to work independently – Strong communication skills

Learning Opportunities:

2 and ½ day in-service at the beginning of the season (will cover all the classes we teach during the season, including day hikes through the Mohican Forest and training on how to facilitate and process team building activities). High ropes course training. *All in-services are paid trainings – Opportunity to work with other seasonal staff members and full time staff members on curriculum development.
