Samantha Maxwell: My Journey with AmeriCorps Public Health

Navigating My Final Co-op Experience

I was fortunate to secure a job with The Ohio State Extension Public Health AmeriCorps for my final co-op experience.  What distinguishes this role is that it’s fairly new as my cohort is only the second in existence. This program began in response to the profound impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The main goal of this program was to provide the public with thorough information on vaccines and preventative measures for infectious illnesses. However as the pandemic slowed down this program hasn’t, and it’s important to emphasize that this project covers a wider range of public health issues than only COVID-19, as it did initially.

What I find most unique about this co-op experience, is that it stems from my concurrent membership as a full-time employee of AmeriCorps as well as through The Ohio State University. I have also been given the opportunity to work hand in hand with the CDC and become certified in a range of certifications including mental health care.

With a reputation for making significant contributions to the fields of agriculture, health, and wellness, the Ohio State University Extension primarily concentrates on training and public outreach. On the other hand, the AmeriCorps Public Health initiative, closely aligned with Ohio State Extension, concentrates its efforts on advancing public health pursuits within rural and underserved communities in Ohio. This innovative AmeriCorps program has allowed me to gain practical experience in the diverse field of public health while maintaining financial stability and declaring the social determinants of health. In addition, the AmeriCorps Public Health program plays a crucial role in developing abilities related to writing grant proposals, analyzing data, and evaluating programs. Improving the general health and well-being of the communities we assiduously serve is the main goal of our projects.

As an AmeriCorps Public Health member, you can find me working with other public health organizations on a local and national basis. My position often consists of working in public health departments, clinics, and awareness campaigns, where I’ve had the opportunity to be fully immersed in the complex fields of health education, policy creation, and public health research.
